Back to school means watch your speed

All road users are being urged to be take care in school zones as students return for term four from 19th October 2009.

This means the 40km/hr School Zone speed limits will be in operation again on gazetted school days between 8.00am and 9.30am and 2.30pm and 4.00pm.

Over the coming months police will be targeting speeding, parking and other offences within school zones. Traffic offences in school zones attract increased fines and demerit points.

Leeton Shire Council Road Safety and Traffic Officer, Sandra Robinson asks drivers to be aware of school zone signs, pay attention to school crossings and to watch out for children.

“The safety of children around our schools is a key community concern. This year has seen many examples of speeding and failure to stop at children’s crossings. Drivers using Wade Avenue, Ash and Church streets are particularly poor at sticking to the 40km/h speed restriction with over 60% of drivers going too fast,” said Mrs Robinson.

“Unfortunately, observations show many of these drivers are parents and carers on their way to school that fail to take note of other school zones in the area. Also, many work and trade vehicles appear to be offenders and some drivers have even been observed talking on mobile phones which poses a significant risk to pedestrians.”

Term four for NSW schools runs from 19th October through to December 18th, 2009.
