Leeton Shire Council are pleased to announce that they will receive $20,900 from the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) towards road safety education projects in the 2009/10 financial year. Projects will target speeding, drink driving, seatbelts, child restraints, motorcycles and learner drivers.

Projects will target speeding, drink driving, seatbelts, child restraints, motorcycles and learner drivers.

Leeton Shire Road Safety and Traffic Officer, Sandra Robinson says, "We are really pleased to have received funding from the RTA to support projects here in the Shire. Council takes the issue of road safety seriously and these projects will help to educate the community on the issues which need to be addressed in our Shire."

"Speeding continues to be the biggest problem on our roads with around 17% of all injuries and fatal accidents over the last five years attributed directly to speed. This is closely followed by drink driving, which equates to 11.9%. That may not sound much but it is the highest percentage of drink drive attributed fatalities and injuries in the south west region. That's higher than Wagga Wagga, Griffith or Albury."

Mrs Robinson continues, "We have also seen a significant rise in crashes amongst motorcycles and light trucks, such as utes and 4WD. Road safety isn't something to take for granted, we all have a role to play in keeping our community safe."

Any members of the community with road safety concerns should contact Sandra Robinson at Leeton Shire Council on 02 6953 0931.
