About the Shire
Leeton is situated in the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area (MIA) in the Riverina region of New South Wales. The area was once described as a 'howling wilderness' but is now the heart of one of the richest food producing areas of Australia.
A vast oasis of orchards, vineyards, rice fields and vegetable plantings, Leeton Shire is fringed with canals and is unique to Australia. The township of Leeton was the first town designed by famous American architect, Walter Burley Griffin. The town is named after Charles Alfred Lee, the NSW Minister for Public Works at the time the irrigation scheme was being developed.
Tree lined streets, well tendered parks and attractive residential areas set the Leeton scene. The town has been well recognised with major Tidy Towns adn Tourist Town awards in recent years.
